From forest to fun: The unique journey of your CUBORO cube

Join us on a delightful autumn stroll through the forest, a journey that every CUBORO cube undertakes, from the woods to your family’s playroom. At CUBORO, we believe in the magic of natural wood as the foundation of our sustainable and enduring marble run system.

Autumn adventure with Georgy

A walk through the autumn forest is a real feast for the senses - the colorful leaves, the scent of the forest and the chirping of the birds in the bushes! My faithful companion, my dog Georgy, and I go on many of these forays through the forests of the canton of Bern. Most of the deciduous and mixed forests in the Swiss Plateau are home to copper beeches - the very trees from which the CUBORO elements are made. Almost a fifth of all trees in Switzerland are beech. If you spot a beech tree on your next walk through the forest, take a look up at its columnar trunk. The first branches can often only be found at a height of around 15 meters. This knot-free trunk is the ideal basis for the production of our wooden elements. We carefully select each tree for CUBORO: it should be a healthy tree with the straightest possible growth.

The beech trees we use for CUBORO come from sustainably managed Swiss forests. We only use certified Swiss wood for CUBORO . This guarantees quality, origin and sustainability from forestry to the sawmill to the joinery. The particularly hard beech wood has been valued for the production of Toy for a long time - and CUBORO is no exception. The wood is ideal for the precise and even processing required for the CUBORO elements. The first prototype of CUBORO in the late 1970s was made from fir wood, which is much softer and does not offer the same quality and durability. The hardness of the beech wood is a decisive quality factor to ensure that our marble runs will continue to inspire the next generation.

In Remo’s carpenter workshop

From the regional forest, it is only a short journey for our beech trees to the Nyfeler Holzwaren AG joinery, where the Nyfeler family and their employees have been manufacturing the CUBORO elements with great precision and dedication since the 1980s. Georgy and I also make our way to the joinery. Remo Nyfeler welcomes us there with Natti, the family dog. Remo explains to us that up to 30 work steps are necessary to turn a wooden board into a complete CUBORO cube with channels and tunnels.

The first stage in the carpentry workshop is the drying of the beech boards, an important prerequisite for the production of high-quality, chemically untreated and durable wooden elements. After this, the highest precision is required so that the Marble can roll smoothly through your marble run . It is milled, planed, drilled and sanded. To ensure maximum safety when playing, all corners and edges are carefully rounded. Together with Remo, we inspect the CUBORO elements that have just been completed: each cube is checked to ensure that it meets all quality criteria. Remo takes a close look at every deviation of a tenth of a millimeter.

But what happens to the wood scraps that accumulate during production in the joinery? Remo takes us to his heating system. Beech wood has another advantage: the wood burns long and quietly. The chips and offcuts are therefore ideal for heating the joinery and generating the necessary heat for drying the wood. We also try to use as few resources as possible during production and to take care of our environment.

A unique cube in your hands

As we say goodbye to Remo and Natti, we leave with a brand-new CUBORO cube in our hands. Each CUBORO element has a characteristic wood grain, like a fingerprint telling its story from the forest. When you play with your CUBORO set, you will notice how different the elements are and the clear sound the marble makes as it rolls through. This sound testifies to the health and dryness of the wood. This is where the German saying, "let's knock on wood!" originated: Knocking on wood used to test the strength of wooden structures, such as a ship's mast or a house roof.
Beech wood reacts to moisture: As a purely natural product, the mass of the elements can vary slightly depending on the humidity. Our tip: Always store your CUBORO sets in a dry place and make sure that they do not become damp. The CUBORO packaging is ideal for storing your Cube. You can find more tips for building tricky marble runs and detailed information on the origin, history and manufacture of CUBORO in our new book. A little foretaste: The unique growth rings on your CUBORO elements can make a noticeable difference when building tall marble runs. Be inspired by the natural CUBORO elements and look for suitable beech trees for CUBORO in your forest on your next fall walk.
